Adolfo Hernandez

Adolfo Hernandez is a self-taught painter born in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México and raised in El Paso, Texas. The border life between the third and the first world had a great effect on what Adolfo perceived art to be. He first begin to recognize objects and duplicate them on sheets of paper at the age of two, when he was forced to fill up pages with lines and circles by his mother. Eventually this lead to early self-portraits, farm animals, luchadores, comic book superheroes, etc. Many methods and styles of painting are influential in Adolfos paintings, such as surreal art, talavera art, graffiti and stencil art. Adolfo makes every attempt to experiment  with painting on different surfaces, from traditional canvas to scarps of old wood.

Most of his paintings are reflections of his adulthood with the unconsciousness of childhood memories.  Adolfo uses metaphors and symbols to illustrate stories and tell them to audiences using a visual canvas. For example, the “nopal” is his representation of a human with scars and wounds but disguises himself with flower buds to hide his imperfections. Adolfo has completed several commissioned art projects locally and abroad through is own arts company, Inope Visual Arts Studios.   http://www.inopeartanddesign.com/

SIMP

artist-pic-simp

Hailing just 22 miles SE of Washington, D.C. from the city of Waldorf, MD, emerges an emcee named SIMP who is poised to carry on the old-school, funk and soul-filled hip-hop torch dropped by his counterparts. Recently established as co-owner of Atlanta record label, Beat Studios Productions, he now has the perfect avenue to channel his creative vision. This alumni of Hampton University cites his upbringing in an area best known in hip-hop for its energetic “Go-Go” percussion, for the influence that led to his pursuit of making music. “I began spinning records for local parties when I was 14 years old,” he said. “So I had to listen to everything and I developed a broad taste in music.”

challenger8His favorite emcees include Nas and Lupe Fiasco, but the influence of the rap pioneers that starred in the soundtrack of his youth shine through in his recordings and live performances. While his names derives from the word simple (meaning easy to solve or understand, not complicated), SIMP the emcee, is anything but. “A lot of people called me simple when I was growing up so I rolled with it,” states the 23 year old rapper. “I picked it because life can be simple yet complicated in its simplicity.” Some songs lyrically illustrate that concept as he gracefully and rhythmically tells his stories of love, loss, racism and faith. Other songs of his , showcase his wit, and ring with such exuberant energy that they will SIMPly raise the spirit and arouse the body.

Daniel Coleman

Daniel Coleman

Daniel Coleman

“I was born Daniel Coleman, I’m Daniel Coleman now, and I’m gonna die Daniel Coleman…so why not be that as an artist?” says the 24-year-old MC/singer/songwriter/producer about his eventual change of stage name to his birth name. “For years, I changed names to what I thought would be cool or marketable, but now I just wanna do ME.”

dcolemanComing from the Bloomfield neighborhood of Macon, Georgia, Daniel Coleman proudly composes the music that his counterparts often frown on: heartfelt, vulnerable, and pouring with individuality. He has been performing, writing, rapping and singing since he was 13. He would produce songs for a local group of his peers to hone his production craft and would do so until he graduated high school in 2003. After graduation, he attended Savannah State University with a hunger for more book smarts AND more hip-hop. His production became sharper, his lyrics more poignant, and his promotion-savvy heightened. He landed his songs anywhere they could go; among those places, a campus homecoming mixtape and 94.1 the Beat’s Seaport Local Music Show.

Now, with a solid team behind him, he brings what he calls “the best collection of songs I’ve ever made” to the public with The Backpack Music LP, a 12-track manifesto of introspection, self-assurance, and individuality. Alongside it, he has a video to push the album for the song, “Undergraduate”, and a website for his production group, The Musick People Recording Group, which will soon have music from fellow artists Suave Colione, D. Ciano, and Eazy.

“It only takes a second to see the vision…watch the video, listen to the songs, feel the magic…”

Maskil House

Maskil House

Maskil House

Maskil House (born Joshua Franklin Jackson) was born October 14, 1990 in Beaufort South Carolina. Music was an influence since conception. His mother a Jazz singer who’s career came to an abrupt end with the birth of her children. However Joshua’s dream would not dimmed  be so easily. His father was born in Far Rockaway Queens, which brought his strong northern lyricism. Never setting foot in New York until the later years of his life gives him the soul of the south with the mouth of the north. He moved to Atlanta Ga at a very young age where his father was arrested for armed robbery. This was a happening in his life which brought great motivation to his need to speak hope to his peers. His mothers family however have deep roots in Georgia. Where Joshua spent most of his life. There the music of soul singers where heavy. Al Green, The Dells, etc. too many to name. Joshua spent most of his GA life in the small town of Albany Ga. He then moved to  Tallahassee Fl. (pre T Pain. lol) and then Charleston South Carolina. and finally to Savannah. Prides himself on being the Tri-State representative.  Maskil was the term given him by his father shortly after his release from incarceration. meaning the enlightened one in Hebrew. House was later added by his close associate cause of the comment made one day that his rhyme scheme was complicated, like surgery. thus termed House MC. His lyrics are a product of a strong spiritual background and no nonsense upbringing. Musical influences are Common, Mos Def, Kanye West, Robin Thick, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, OutKast, Drake. Maskil House is a member of the writers team known as 4th Period. based in Savannah GA. Everything is up and coming and Maskil House is the front runner.

Al King

Al King

Al King

To say Al K!NG is complex is too obvious and requires too little thought. All humans are complex. The thing is, sometimes, there’s some question about whether or not Al K!NG is human. He looks, acts and sounds like he was adopted by Mr. T and Elvis Costello… from Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory and babysat by Basquiat, waiting on his folks in an after-school program led by Afrika Bambaataa and some nameless Shaolin Master of a 1000 Flows.

On his 22nd birthday, a little more than a year after first appearing in public doing Turbo’s broom dance from Breakin’ 2, the always-silent-off-stage star posted a picture of himself, professionally shot but as a spur of the moment goof, arms folded and chest puffed out with an indian headress. He then asked, “Who wants to party with the K!NG, you worms?!”

That’s par for the course with him.

But it’s not just the way he dresses, walks and talks, or even a comment about his preternatural talent, It’s the fact heal-king2 has all that and he comes from a place as country as Twiggs County, Georgia. His meaningful lyrics over heavy bass, synth and strings had to develop somewhere deep within. It’d be easier to believe his spaceship crashed in the woods out there than to think he’s been holed up in the middle of rural Georgia this whole time.

Then you get to know a little more and for a moment, though it’s hard, you look past the music.

Born in Atlanta, GA, he was raised in Macon, GA by a father who, as an old school B-boy, was rhyming and throwing up graffiti in New York when he was Al’s age. His mother is a self-taught fashion designer. AL K!NG is one that values creativity above anything else. So much that he’s his own fashion consultant. Art played a huge role in his life growing up. While in High School, AL K!NG started producing music at home and breakdancing every chance he got while in school. Now, he does the art for his shows, breakdances during his sets. He even put together album art for his EP, as well as the one for Jersey native, Floco Torres, with whom he’s made “Social Collision” (released July 25 2009) and numerous indie acts.

So there’s much more to AL K!NG than just another guy who wants to get rich in the “game”. While he’d certainly welcome fame and even wants it, AL K!NG is really chasing the logical ends to his creativity. He is an artist at the start of his career, just now really getting the grasp of what he can do. Like he’s about to pull out of driveway now that he’s got a handle on how the stick shift works. AL K!NG understands the true meaning of “limitless creation“.

He’s in pursuit of art and that, more than anything else, will determine where he ends up. It won’t be the love of bling…

J’Rell

J-Rell

J-Rell

J’Rell A name can make or break an artist in the oversaturated music industry. An artist name is often the difference between getting a shot or being dismissed as whack off the top. In today’s music industry it’s a rear discovery to find a recording artist who truly epitomizes the word “MUSIC”, but in artist/producer J’Rell that’s exactly what you will find in him. Jerell Anthony Moore born November 18th,1986 of New Haven ,CT started his musical journey at a young age. Inheriting his musical talents from his family, J’Rell started playing the piano and drums at the age 6, and later at age 12 started playing the organ at his Grandfather’s church. Becoming the youth musician at the age 13, J’Rell learned the discipline of musicianship . This landed J’Rell a opportunity to perform in front of a crowd of 20,000 at the Madison Square Garden for the McDonalds Gospel Fest . He started recording in the year 2000 performing his first single “ Make Love.” He quickly became recognized as a heavyweight in the art of performance doing open mics and beginnings to headline shows in the northeast region. Which puts him on a pedestal that he can hang with the heavy weights of the game, “ I just feel the beat and let it ride. A great man told me once that my gift will make room for me and place me in front of great men. I‘m just realizing that at that moment my gift had place me in front of one and I didn‘t even know it, that man’s name is Tyler Perry lol ,” says J’Rell. In 2010 J’Rell is moving forward in his career as a solo an artist and plans to make a major impact in the industry. His newest single “Leaving With Two” Is expected to move through the southern eastern region very fast with an infectious hook that the industry heads call an UNDENIABLE RECORD, all J’Rell can say is UN HUH !!!!!!! Floco Torres

Floco Torres

Floco Torres

Kevin ‘Floco Torres’ Williams Jr. got his name from a childhood friends grandmother who noticed how “skinny” he was growing up. When she passed away he decided to take her last name “Torres” and create a brand that would influence people to inquire before they judge(Black Man-Spanish Name). At the age of 22, Floco has created his own hollywood called “Psycadelphia”, won two indie awards for that said hollywood and his music movement in general, created a fan base from his hometown Willingboro New Jersey all the way down to Macon Georgia, and continues to make his mark as one of the next influential entertainers/entreprenuers/inspirations in the industry. Born in Willingboro, New Jersey, he grew up five months at a time in places from New York to Pennsylvania, with a few years in the South thrown in for good measure. He’s in Georgia now, visiting family and building a base in the Southeast as he’d been doing back home. It’s been a little culture shock to say the least, but standing out just fuels the fire.

In an area dominated musically and culturally by mainstream country and thug rap, he’s a dude channeling a varietyFloco Torres of influences, not only in his music but also in his very walk. That’s drawn a lot of attention from folks who feel just as isolated by their upstream efforts for individuality. They identify because he uses sarcasm and self-denigrating humor to defend the big gaping wounds on his shirt-sleeve heart. And they flock because he funnels it all back through a passion and intensity on the stage that matches the lyrical wit and charm in his recordings.

There are moments when, in the throes of a crowd-rousing chorus, you think he could be an old school soul singer, pouring it out like there’ll never be another performance, like there are generations of mixed-up sorrow and satisfaction that he’s got to unleash. Then, just as impressively, he starts a chuckle and the whimsy returns, playfully eschewing objectification, telling all the ladies in the crowd, “I’m not trying to be rude/I’m not lookin’ at your boobs/I’m just checking out your sneakers.” (from the song “Chicks With Kicks” featuring Al K!NG).

He’s just a dude being himself as best he can, navigating the gauntlet of simply being alive. Just like everyone else, except he’s recorded 300 songs in the process. His ambitions are no different than most folks: he wants to make a living and be able take care of his family. He labors in the studio and on the stage. There isn’t a blueprint for what he’s doing, but he stays on top of all his options, anchoring a seat in the bookstore, combing over magazines and researching changes in the world around him, keeping his toes dipped in several different cultural ponds, and looking for an opportunity to reach more people. If his gut and that growing throng of fans are right, he won’t have to spend as much time figuring out a way to reach people as he will being able to just enrich the ones who’ve already found him.

SUAFRadio Interview w/Mr. Al Pete-Click on SUAF Radio

Video: “Something More” featuring Tony White

In this day and age, true to heart Hip-Hop artists are far and few between, and Mr. Al Pete is definitely one of those artists. One part Emcee, one part DJ, and one part Musical Entrepreneur, makes up just some of the ingredients in the recipe for this hip-hop elitist in Jacksonville, FL.

Entering into the world of writing rhymes at the young age of 9, Al Pete has been perfecting his craft for some time now. Once he began his journey into adulthood, Al Pete decided to make moves towards his goal of being one of the top entertainers in Hip-Hop. One of his initial steps involved coming together with his long time friend and musical peer Shirl Dee Capital, to create GrownFolk Entertainment in 2004. Providing an umbrella for many different entertainment aspects of Shirl Dee and Al Pete, GrownFolk was just the beginning of many avenues to come.

In 2005 under the advisory of his Uncle, role model, and mentor Tru.ski, Al Pete decided to take his love for the genre, and enjoyment of creating musical sets for friends and family, to another level by learning the art of turntablism which is housed under the G.F.E. label as well. Al Pete began spinning for parties, poetry events, social gatherings, venues, and fashion shows. Along with all of this Al Pete was still working diligently to keep his own music flowing and to keep up with performances in and out of town.

In the spring of 2006, Al Pete and Shirl Dee decided to put together the first mixtape to come from GrownFolk Entertainment; “Exhibit A” which received an overwhelming response from the masses. That year momentum kept pushing forward, and in the winter of 2006 Al Pete joined alongside with The Elevated Hip-Hop Experience for a special live recorded album. Drive still pushing on in 2007, the spring brought another compilation album release “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” which included two of Al Pete’s close companions and fellow artists Tough Junkie and Picasso.

On February 10th 2009, Al Pete released his debut album “Talk About It”, which includes his popular singles “Somethin’ More”, “All is Good” and “The Truth”. Creating videos for “All Is Good” and “The Truth” has only continued to keep the buzz for the album going. Receiving 4 out of 5 with Reax Magazine’s review and also a write up in Jacksonville’s own Folio Weekly. Mr. Al Pete has been spreading through out the region with shows in various cities in Florida and Georgia.

Mr. Al Pete continues moving at full force with performances, features on various Hip-Hop albums, and mixtapes, and still offers DJ services with events such as Nokturnal Escape and Fashion Forward Inc. With his new album G3.0 being released in December of 2009 and the buzz for his acting debut in Be Dynamik’s upcoming film “Treacherous” to be release in 2010, nothing will dull Mr. Al Pete’s shine.
