Jamal Touré, J.D.

He is known as the “People’s Historian”.

Geechee Kunda, the Gullah Geechee Cultural Center and Museum of the United States has designated him as one of their two Resident Scholars (Ogbonna Mossi is the other Resident Scholar).  He is the Artistic Director of Geechee Kunda.

He is known as a Djeli (living historian or griot) who can comment on the lives of African people at home and in the diaspora. He is one of the first Gullah Geechees to be charged with that responsibility. Jamal Touré, J.D. founded Day Clean: The African Soul to inform, enlighten, and inspire African people regarding their cultures, and history. Day Clean is international in scope and vision.

He has performed at programs/receptions for the Prime Minister of Haiti, the Mayor of Savannah, the Enstoolment of Queen Quet, Hassoum Ceesay, the Director of the Gambian National Museum Danny Glover, and more importantly, he has performed for the people.

Day Clean Journeys International was created by him to show a panoramic and multidimensional  view of the history of Savannah and the Lowcountry areas of Georgia and South Carolina .He was the co-writer of an award winning play regarding Yellow Fever in Savannh (Educational Program of the Year 2004).

Currently, he serves on the U. S. Deparment of the Interior’ s Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission as a Commissioner.
